Matthew Shines in European BMX Championships

Year 7 student, Matthew Gilston, enjoyed an unforgettable experience as he competed in the European BMX championships in Verona, Italy. Matthew rode unbelievably well to finish an amazing 11th Place out of 108 riders in his age group.

Matthew, who rides for Manchester BMX club and is sponsored to race for team ‘Get Racing’, competed against other riders from across Europe in extremely difficult conditions, as he battled with searing temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius. He rode well in three qualifying races, making it through to the knock out stages where he was able to reach the semi-final, finishing in sixth place.

Matthew spoke of how pleased he was with his performance, saying, “I was delighted with my performance. The conditions were really difficult but I was pleased to make it so far into the competition.” Matthew will now go on to compete at national championships, held in August, in Blackpool at his ‘favourite’ race track.

Miss Birchall, Head of Year 7 and transition manager at Albany Academy, said, “I’m getting quite excited because I believe we have future Olympian in Year 7! Well done Matthew! An amazing achievement.”
