Albany Academy Boxing club had a surprise guest in the form of GB boxer Lisa Whiteside. The boxer who is part of the GB team and has won the British Championships in her weight division was on hand to provide the club with some inspiration.
The boxing club which is run by coaches from Jennings Gym is for Year 7 and 8 boys and girls. The club regularly attracts over 15 participants per week including a large amount of girls is funded by the Sport England Sportivate funding.
Lisa talked to the students about her career and how much determination is needed to be a boxer. This clearly inspired the students and the medals that Lisa brought in were testament to her determination to succeed.
After the initial talk Lisa joined the coach from Jennings Gym (Dave Jennings) to run a lesson teaching students various attacking shots as well as defensive techniques. Lisa said, “I attended the Sportivate boxing project at Albany academy hoping to raise aspirations and inspire the young people! The young people were amazing and so enthusiastic; I could see great potential in them all! Lovely to tell them my story and hopefully that will encourage them to follow their dreams!”
Lisa will be visiting the club again to see the progression in the students as they move on to hopefully join Jennings Gym.
